چکیده

Over the past few decades, the competition for freshwater resources has substantially increased in arid/semi-arid areas, exacerbating the pressure on the largest user of water, namely agriculture, to consume less water. However, reducing crop consumptive water use or evapotranspiration through water stress can have a negative impact on production economics if not precisely managed. Remote sensing of crop canopy temperature is a scientifically-based and easy-to-apply method that can be used at field scales to evaluate crop water status at or near real-time. In this study, thermal images of maize canopy under two deficit irrigation regimes were acquired using a hand-held thermal camera. The results showed that the low-frequency deficit irrigation treatment resulted in higher maize temperatures compared to the high-frequency deficit irrigation regime. A methodology for converting the temperature value of each pixel into a spatially variable crop water stress index (CWSI) is described. Within the low-frequency deficit irrigation treatment, estimated CWSI values were correlated with spatial variations in soil texture. Finally, the potential of infrared thermography and current limitations are discussed in detail.

Estimation of Actual Evapotranspiration, Water productivity, and Irrigation Efficiency of Wheat Fields in Surface and Sprinkler Irrigation Systems Using Remote Sensing

In arid and semi-arid regions, water resource management and optimization of applying irrigation water are particularly important. For optimization of applying irrigation water, the estimated values of actual evapotranspiration are necessary for avoiding excessive or inadequate applying water. The estimation of actual crop evapotranspiration is not possible in large areas using the traditional ...

A multi-scale remote sensing approach for monitoring northern peatland hydrology: present possibilities and future challenges.

Remote sensing has the potential to provide quantitative spatially explicit hydrological information across northern peatland complexes. This paper details a multi-scale remote sensing approach for assessing the use of Sphagnum mosses as proxy indicators of near-surface hydrology. Several spectral indices developed from the near infra-red (NIR) and shortwave infra-red (SWIR) liquid water absorp...

Infra-Red Thermography as a High-Throughput Tool for Field Phenotyping

The improvements in crop production needed to meet the increasing food demand in the 21st Century will rely on improved crop management and better crop varieties. In the last decade our ability to use genetics and genomics in crop science has been revolutionised, but these advances have not been matched by our ability to phenotype crops. As rapid and effective phenotyping is the basis of any la...

Acid and saline seeps are an increasing problem in most parts of the World and Australia as well. They are areas of bare soil or reduced crop production. Recent laboratory, field, and remote sensing studies have explored the use of visible to short – wave infrared (VIS- SWIR; 400-2500 nm) reflectance data for characterizing the mineralogy of mine wastes, surface mineralogy of acid-saline affect...
